Directions
Guwahati is a city in the state of Assam in the northeast of India. While you can connect directly from some countries in Asia and the Middle East, for those coming from North America and Europe, you will likely need to fly via a major Indian city. We recommend connection in Delhi, Mumbai, or Calcutta (in that order). If you aren't too worried about missing your connection in India (remember that cold February weather delays fights leaving NA & Europe often!) you should consider getting a round trip ticket to a major city and then a cheap internal fight. On some itineraries the savings is over $600! So, when looking for tickets, instead of looking NYC-Guwahati, you’d look NYC-Delhi, and then book a separate flight Delhi-Guwahati.
A note about Driving
Don't. Just trust us. We both live in India, and we're telling you, don't do it. Taxis are cheap and ubiquitous. You'll also be pleased to know that Uber works, you can pay cash, and you don't even have to download a new app!
Visas & Stuff to Do in Assam and Beyond
Unless you plan to do very regular travel to India, an e-visa is the way for you. You should apply about a week in advance and carry the confirmation paperwork with you. You can apply for an e-visa here.
The Northeast of India is AMAZING, and very few Western tourists spend much time there. We highly recommend a trip to Cherapunjee in the neighbouring state of Meghalaya (named “abode of the clouds” in the local language), or to Kaziranga National Park (home of most of the one-horned rhinos in the world). You are also near Mazuli, the largest river island in the world with some amazing cultures, and near the Himalayas via Sikkim. Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy it!
